Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past couple of weeks, you’ll know that AJ Styles finally made his eagerly anticipated WWE debut during the 2016 Royal Rumble match. The Phenomenal One has rightly received huge pops from the WWE Universe, but what lies in wait for arguably the best all-round wrestler in the world today? AJ’s arrival in WWE has opened up a whole new world of dream matches that were not previously possible; here are some matches that would be instant classics.
This is a matchup many wrestling fans thought they would never have the opportunity to witness; there is no doubt that a match between the face that runs the place and The Phenomenal One would be an intriguing battle. For a number of people this would represent the ultimate clash between the golden boy of WWE and the darling of the independent scene.
Cena may have more than his fair share of haters in the WWE Universe and the Internet Wrestling Community (IWC), but The Champ remains one of the company’s top performers. His United States Open Challenge matches with the likes of Cesaro, Neville and Sami Zayn as well as his series with Kevin Owens highlighted that he can still adapt his style when needed and perform to the highest level.
Conversely, The Phenomenal One has never been more suited to matches in WWE, his in-ring psychology is the best it has ever been and his style is not as high-risk as it was throughout the 2000s.
The two Superstars have already shared pictures of each other on Instagram, so hopefully we see this rivalry blossom to a stage where they go toe-to-toe inside the ring.
It’s almost a guarantee that anyone who steps inside a ring for a match with Cesaro is made to look good – including The Swiss Superman himself. His unbelievable strength and technical ability allows Cesaro to always deliver top-notch performances.
A match with AJ Styles would be something special and hopefully help put both Superstars over and further their WWE careers. You only have to look at the matches Cesaro and Sami Zayn had in NXT to get a taster of a potential battle between The King of Swing and Styles.
Cesaro and Styles have somehow never faced each other, despite both of them spending a number of years on the independent scene. Therefore this would be a dream match for wrestling fans of all backgrounds. Unfortunately Cesaro is another who is on the shelf due to injury, but nothing would be better on his return than a series of matches with The Phenomenal One.
This one might have to wait a bit given that Rollins is out injured for the foreseeable future, but it would definitely be a match worth waiting for. All signs point towards a legendary bout as both Superstars consistently turn in high-quality performances and are arguably at their in-ring peak.
The Architect was vocal about wanting to face AJ before any rumours started circulating about the former NJPW and TNA star potentially arriving in WWE. Interestingly enough, the two faced off at an NWA event just under 10 years ago. Is it fate that they are meant to meet again 10 years later inside the squared circle?
Arguably the best heel in the wrestling industry today, Kevin Owens has shown superb mic skills and character development since his WWE debut. Not only that, but Owens has adapted perfectly to the desired WWE in-ring style – you only have to look at his matches with John Cena and his most recent bout with Dean Ambrose at the Royal Rumble to realise that.
A match between Owens and AJ Styles would be a classic that would represent a quintessential heel facing off against a high-flying and red-hot babyface. WWE also has a natural jumping off point for this rivalry given that Owens eliminated Styles from the Royal Rumble and proceeded to mock him afterwards.
It’s evident, from watching their previous encounters, that the in-ring styles of both Superstars complement each other nicely. In essence there is something for everyone – WWE fans get to witness what would be an instant classic and indie fans would see the renewal of a battle which took place numerous times on the independent scene.
This match would be a dream for fans of independent wrestling. Although both Bryan and Styles have previously clashed on a number of occasions (most notably in Ring of Honour) there would still be a huge appetite for this match.
It’s been over a decade since both these men worked together inside the squared circle and a matchup between them now would be a natural fit for the top of any pay-per-view card.
The elephant in the room is obviously Daniel Bryan’s on-going injury woes and as more time passes, the less likely it seems we will ever see him compete in WWE again. Let’s hope this is not the case and that we get to see these two outstanding performers lock horns in a WWE ring.
Whether WWE decides to go ahead with any of these matches is anyone’s guess, but we can live in hope. Are these the matches you would like to see? If not tell us your dream AJ Styles matches in the comments section below.
